Two of them are partners, out of them one is African-American and the other is one white. The third character is of a young lawyer of African-American descent who is their law clerk. They are all deciding if they should or not take the case of a wealthy white man who has been accused of raping a woman of African-American woman. It seems like an open and shut play but it’s not.
Emotions of shame, guilt and lies have all been splendidly highlighted and very well dealt in this fast-paced show which is sure to stay in the minds of the theatergoers and have them discussing it long after the curtain has been brought down.
The audience members will without any doubt come with their own set of opinions and judgments. The writer of this play has also penned the Glengarry Glen Ross which was a huge success as well. If you had liked the aforementioned play you will surely enjoy all the story of Race.
Mamet has done the best that could have been done with this show. He chose a provocative topic and raised several questions in the minds of the audience rather than give them many answers. This show has also bagged the Pulitzer Prize. It is a must watch by all adults. As for kids they better stay away, although there is no violence on stage, the story makes this piece kind of inappropriate for very young kids.
