La rondine (that can be translated in the English language as “The Swallow”) is a popular opera act that has been done in three acts that have been given by the talented Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto that in turn has been done by Giuseppe Adami. It has been adapted on a libretto that has been given by both Alfred Maria Willner and Heinz Reichert. The debut performance of this opera had been held at the venue of the Grand Théâtre de Monte Carlo (that is also known as the Théâtre du Casino) in Monte Carlo on the 27th of March in the year 1917. In the autumn season of the year 1913 Puccini had been considered as being one of the most revered living opera composers in the entire world, owing to the fact that the directors of Vienna's Karl Theater had commissioned him for the composition of a Viennese operetta. After he had made the confirmation that it might as well turn out to be a kind of a comic opera that may not include any spoken dialogues in it, he had given his consent. For a couple of years he continued to work, sometimes intensely and sometimes with much difficulty. Then as time progressed and the spring season of the year 1916 approached, finally the opera was finished. The originally Viennese première had been stopped owing to the outbreak of the very First World War and the eventual entry of Italy in the Alliance that had been against Austria-Hungary.

In Italy, Puccini had also made an offer of selling his work to his editor who had been named Tito Ricordi, but he had declined the offer to purchase it and hence Ricordi's rival that is Renzo Sonzogno had bought it and obtained the copyrights to it. He finally relocated the première of this opera to the neutral French territory. Hence the première had been held in Monte-Carlo in the year 1917 and at the premiere the opera had gotten a very positive initial reception by both the public and the press. In spite of this and the artistic value of the musical score of La rondine, it is considered to be amongst Puccini's less successful works In terms of the box office.

The first act of the opera involves Rambaldo Fernandez who is a rich banker and is entertaining some of his friends in the salon that belongs to his mistress named Magda. There the center of attention is a poet named Prunier who is entertaining the crowd that is present in the salon, with his gossip. In the gossip he declares that "Love reigns again in Paris," Lisette who is Magda's maid laughs at the thought of sentimental love and continues with her work. Then Prunier goes on to talk about “Doretta” about whom the ladies have not heard before.
