The Joffrey Ballet dance company was instituted in 1956. It lasted from 1995 to 2004. The company was also known as The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. It is known to be one of the most active and front most ballet companies in the world. The company has performed famous ballets like Romeo & Juliet and The Nutcracker all across the nation. Many intellectually productive choreographers have worked for this ballet institution like Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, George Balanchine, Gerald Arpino and Robert Joffrey.

1956 was a time in which the touring companies used to perform only lesser versions of ballet classics, Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino brought a revolution and initiated to make a different six-dancer supporting players that toured the country in a station wagon that had a U haul trailor being pulled by it, who performed real ballets that were created by Robert Joffrey. In New york Joffrey tought ballet classes and earned to pay the dancers' salaries, while Gerald Arpino formed a company across America's heartland. Their first performance was done in a major city of Chicago in 1957. The Joffrey Ballet originally settled down in New York City, originally named the Robert Joffrey Theatre Ballet. In 1962, an enthusiastic choreographer Alvin Ailey was requested to work for the company. Rebekah Harkness further made international touring possible by touring to the Soviet Union in 1963. But in 1964 she and Joffrey departed.
