Dorothy Alexander was the founder of this ballet company which was initially named as Dorothy Alexander Concert Group in the year 1929. In 1967 it was finally named as Atlanta Ballet after it gained professional status all over the nation. After running the company for three decades, Dorothy Alexander selector Robert Barnet as her successor John McFall became Barnet�s successor in the year 1994 and is still working as the Artistic Director.

Atlanta Ballet introduced three dancing education centers in the year 1996. These centers were located in Cobb, Buckhead and Midtown Atlanta. Different genres of dancing are taught in these dancing centers including tap, jazz, modern, ballet, hip hop and more. Adults and children, starting from age 2, can all learn dancing here. The purpose of these Centers for Dancing Education is to provide the adults with an opportunity to express themselves through their talent and creativity. It also helps nurture the dancing talents of the young students. These dancing centers teach 150,000 students each year in Metro Atlanta.
